Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, are responsible for carrying air in and out of the lungs. In individuals with asthma, the airways become inflamed, swollen, and narrowed, which can significantly restrict airflow and make breathing difficult.

Symptoms of Asthma
The symptoms of asthma can vary in severity and frequency from person to person. Common symptoms include:

  • Wheezing: A high-pitched whistling sound when breathing, particularly during exhalation.
  • Shortness of Breath: Difficulty catching your breath, often accompanied by a feeling of breathlessness.
  • Chest Tightness: A sensation of pressure or squeezing in the chest.
  • Coughing: Persistent or intermittent coughing, especially at night, early in the morning, or during physical activity.

Triggers of Asthma Symptoms
Asthma symptoms can be triggered by a wide range of factors, including:

  • Allergens: Such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold.
  • Irritants: Like smoke, strong odors, pollution, or chemical fumes.
  • Respiratory Infections: Colds, flu, or sinus infections can exacerbate symptoms.
  • Exercise-Induced Asthma: Symptoms that occur during or after physical activity.
  • Weather Changes: Cold air or sudden temperature changes.
  • Stress or Strong Emotions: Emotional distress or excitement can sometimes provoke symptoms.

How Asthma Affects the Airways
In people with asthma, three main changes occur in the airways:

  1. Inflammation: The lining of the airways swells, making them more sensitive to triggers.
  2. Bronchoconstriction: The muscles around the airways tighten, narrowing the passages.
  3. Excess Mucus Production: The inflamed airways produce more mucus, which can block airflow.

Types of Asthma
Asthma can be classified into different types based on triggers or underlying causes, including:

  • Allergic Asthma: Triggered by allergens like pollen or dust.
  • Non-Allergic Asthma: Triggered by irritants like smoke or pollution.
  • Exercise-Induced Asthma: Symptoms occur during or after exercise.
  • Occupational Asthma: Triggered by exposure to substances in the workplace.
  • Severe Asthma: A more persistent and difficult-to-control form of asthma.
