Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a protein made by the liver that helps protect the lungs from damage. In people with Alpha-1, the body does not produce enough of this protein or the protein does not work properly. As a result, the lungs may become more vulnerable to damage, and abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin protein can accumulate in the liver, increasing the risk of liver disease.
Symptoms and disease progression vary from person to person. Early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and appropriate treatment can help protect lung function, support liver health, and improve quality of life.
